Corporate video analysis

I decided to look a relevant companies for my corporate client video as my client is a manager of social housing for vulnerable people. I looked at some videos on YouTube and found that most were not that good or that well made.

Impumelolo– African social housing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfedIYlazzU

Targets- Low income families or single parents.

Purpose- To try and inform, possibly attract funders and there is a lots of shots of children to possibly pull on people’s heartstrings.

Lighting- A mix of natural outdoors, sunshine and indoor offices. There is no colour correction and looks very bland and uninteresting.

Music- Twinkly happy music.

Style- Documentary like, lots of people talking giving stats. The talks of facilities but actual of it. Very wordy, with the typography looking really basic and cheap and it and doesn’t look attractive.

Improvements- They could with a new video to make it more attractive, to show more of the facilities and less information.

Grand Union

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAfQsSxP2Ho

Purpose- To advertise and promote to potential clients.

Style- Put like a news showreel, very info based, not emotive, interviewing the chief executive. The company who made the video put the video in many parts online and it feels they shoved way too much in one minute. With sometimes using slip screen but it insent very effective.

Music- Cheerful, bouncy but very basic and adds to the mess.

Shots and lighting- Outdoors, natural light and indoor, terrible, makes C.E.O look shiny again with the video no colour correction was used and the video feels very washed down making everything just look very bland and not appealing.

They try to make the typography look stylistic, buy making look all wavy an impressive but it just looks awful. It’s the kind of affects you would get on movie maker.

Again they could do with a new video that showed more of the clients and human personally making there residents look comfortable. That shows there actual product, and business they are trying to sell rather than info.

 Aire view care home

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKtBBfzO0f4

Purpose- To advertise to potential old people clients.

Style- Voiceover of the shots of people in communal actives, bright, lots of shots of affection. This is the best of the three that I have watched and it is clear more time and money was spend on it. Not only is there voiceover but there is also interviews with the clients that stay there and shots of the inside and outside to give you a real look at the place. But at times it does feel a little cheesy and can at some points can be hard to watch.

Shots- Slow panning, linking the whole thing together and the video feels very smooth and real professnial.

Typography- Is used quiet a lot throughout, but not overused. The text is simple and straight forward and simple but works to the film effect.

Lighting- It highlights the selling point of being clean and bright. Like a hotel. The lighting is very basic purely because of the setting and you would have time to do a full set up of a lighting studio.

The locations of the piece have a mixture of indoor and doors and the interviews take place in bright places to add more effect and make it more appealing to the viewer who is watching.

Improvements- With this video there is less to improve. It could be less cheesy because if I was an old person it might put me off just a bit. There seems to be no men in the whole video. Making me wonder if it is just a home for old woman? They could also make it better for the sons and daughters who are watching as well, because they want it to be a bit more serious and the cheesieness may put them off.

http://stsidwells.org.uk/about

A Community centre based in a former church in Exeter that offers many chances for anybody in the community, even those with special needs they help them by providing cooking classes, English classes, fitness classes They are an impendent charity. There branding is simple and there front is basic.

They provide a café for people to look into the projects they do, by having leaflets in the back of the café. You can also find information by asking the staff within the café.

THE BRIEF

Detailed explanation of the client’s requirements and the opportunities and limitations of the brief you have negotiated with them

With a company like this, you would mainly expect them to focus on the café. Because that’s where most of the activies and money comes from.
TARGET AUDIENCE PROFILE

What is your overall intention with this suite of idents? What are you hoping to achieve? What sort of corporate identity are you hoping to create? Are you starting a new brand or re-branding an existing product? How do you hope to appeal to your target audience?

I would have the film aimed people on the social grade E to appeal to those who cannot find work as easily as others, or elderly people who can no longer work, and find café’s an easy place out get and socialise The tone would be quite layback because I would not want it to be too informal and more show the people who would watch it, what it is that they do and how you can found them by going to their café and joining there sessions.

ORIGINAL CONCEPT FOR YOUR FILM

Including full synopsis, any specific issues of style or use of technology

film would begin with an outside shot of the centre, the camera would slowly pull in. I would then like to cut to the general day to day of what happens in the café. Some of the staff making coffees and cakes and various other meals. I would cut to some of the staff talking about their jobs and the other things they are able to do there.  I would then interview the manger and what he tries to bring to St Sidwells.  The purpose would be to bring them more clients and more money would mean more sessions.

The only issues I think I might face is with permissions to film, either staff or customers. Because the customers may just want to get on with what they are doing and some of the staff may be a bit camera shy and will not want to be in the film.

Another problem I may face is if I film in the kitchen and some hot food may be around and it could damage the equipment.

With the camera shots I would try to shot the whole centre, including the garden, I would take long shots to close up shots and cutaways of some objects.

Then I would head in the centre itself and shot everything within the building.

With the café is where I would get most shots, with close ups of the staff working and extreme close up the food, to make people nail bit at the screen.

http://www.eltc.org.uk

A theatre company based in Exeter. That has run since 1954 that induces a wardrobe department, workshops and a coffee bar. They are employed by Exeter city council. There quiet a small company with their website offering many chances to try out or work for them and they try to get younger people involved in their productions.

[But I think you may need some acting experience in acting because they do Pantomime

THE BRIEF

Detailed explanation of the client’s requirements and the opportunities and limitations of the brief you have negotiated with them

Because they are only a small company, they would most likely want me to make it as big as it could possibly be! They would want to bring as much interest as possible and the fact they are employed but the council, you would most likely have run it past them as well.   The brief would go over what dates I would be filming at and the days in which they run their theatre groups.

TARGET AUDIENCE PROFILE

What is your overall intention with this suite of idents? What are you hoping to achieve? What sort of corporate identity are you hoping to create? Are you starting a new brand or re-branding an existing product? How do you hope to appeal to your target audience?

The target audience I think would be a Social grade C1 orC2 because the people who watch plays and theatre would have to be very smart and have patient for newly trained actors who are just starting out. Because these are some of the higher social grades, the film would have to be very professional and edited very smoothly.

If I was to aim for these social grades, they would likely have more money and have an interest in joining them or watching their productions.

I would want to change the company more of just capture what they do and bring it worldwide to bring this company more attention.

ORIGINAL CONCEPT FOR YOUR FILM

Including full synopsis, any specific issues of style or use of technology

I would ask if some of their other productions have been filmed and may offer them a show reel and then I would make them a documentary of what they do in Exeter. I would film Rehearsals, beginnings of their projects and Interviews with actors and some of the people who run it.

The show reel would be 2 minutes

The reason I would make them a showreel because it condenses down there productions, into just clips. Viewers would find it easier to watch if you’re watching anything from them for the first time and it’s also a good way to show off.

The only issue I think would be the permission forms and actually getting the film pass the council.

For main film the shots would be very basic as I would film them talking at the beginning of their sessions and have look around in case I would find anything else hanging around.

I would film a lot of their rehearsals because then you can see how their productions progress from week one to the final week before a show.

I would also get cutaways for their costume cupboard to show people what it looks like.

The last thing I get would be interviews with some of the actors and the people that run the company and ask questions on why you started this production company.

Westward housing

https://www.westwardhousing.org.uk/

A housing company based all around the UK that provides social housing for those who cannot afford regular homing and offering houses to those people who maybe more Vulnerable. They are a non-profit organisation and work with the community. Their logo and text is quite simple and basic. Their information is limited and there is insent really a lot on there, and most of it you have to find out by either emailing them or phoning them up.

THE BRIEF

Detailed explanation of the client’s requirements and the opportunities and limitations of the brief you have negotiated with them

A scoping document and storyboard or detailed summary of the planned content to start with.   Plan a shot list and storyboard to bring into the next meeting. Provide a list of agreed planned uses for the film, including something to say that Westward housing Group will have approval controls over any uses that are not listed.

TARGET AUDIENCE PROFILE

What is your overall intention with this suite of idents? What are you hoping to achieve? What sort of corporate identity are you hoping to create? Are you starting a new brand or re-branding an existing product? How do you hope to appeal to your target audience?

The target audience is quite clear, because the housing group is specific people on low income, they’re also do a support service for older people.

The current website seems quite limited. It’s wordy and information based without giving people a feel of things visually, I think it would really help both the housing group and potentially clients, if something was presented that a presented   a more emotive content, such as more friendly or comfortable it might be.

I would like to portray an identity that is quite caring and supportive due to some of the clients being vulnerable or elderly. This would complement and enhance this.

To appeal to the clients I would like shoot on a normal day with real life situations going to show caring interactions between people.

However some plans may change because the company’s board must go over my plan and decide whether they want it this way or not.

ORIGINAL CONCEPT FOR YOUR FILM

Including full synopsis, any specific issues of style or use of technology

The first thing I am going to do is try and make the video faster paced and not just interview one person. Because I have seen other corporate videos and noticed that there is too much talking, and not giving a general basic visual upon their clients or the building where there company is based.

I need to check permissions for the residents that stay there, just in case I can’t film them, or they may not want to be filmed. Some residents after a few years may withdraw their consent because they don’t want to be associated with there past.

It would change a lot of things if I couldn’t get permission, because I would have to rethink the whole video.

The camera I will use a lot of panning shots and close up on objects.

And shots of the building.

Weather could be an issue for lighting and mode.

The narrative will involve edited interviews with some of the clients and the people that work there, and there daily routines of what they do day to day. Also the fertilles and an inside of a flat, so the future clients will get an idea of what it’s like to live there.

The length of the video will be three minutes long, I think if it’s longer people may be uninterested if you make it any longer.

With the editing, I plan to make it smooth and clean cut, to make look perfessiaol. I add text boxes to the staff and who they are in the company.

Mortimer House film Proposal         6/10/17

My idea is to have a three-minute to four minute film about Mortimer house and what it’s like to live there. Featuring interviews with the staff and clients. The video will also feature cutaways of the building, and an inside of an empty studio, so that when a client will watch the video they will no what to expect.

I want to do this way to make feel friendlier and so the clients won’t be put off by the guys in suits.

I aim to make the audience for young people who are more vulnerable than others, who cannot find a place to live with earlier, a condition or past problems. That are on social grade E and have not real source of income.

My ambition is have the video bring in new potential clients, and also to give a basic understanding of the rent and pay.

I Plan to have the video shot within two days (TBA) and edited before the 10th of November.

I will use simple music and make sure it is royalty free, so that there aren’t any copyright issues.

I will prepare a shot list and storyboard before the days of shooting, so that when I get there, I will know what to shoot right away.

The shots will include a full wide shot of the outside building, shots of the inside of the building, using panning shots and close ups and some shots of the staff working and the clients use the facilities.

I plan to film at least three interviews from the staff. Including the building manger and asking questions such as. “What do you do here at Mortimer house”?

An interview script will also be prepared beforehand, so the questions won’t come off the blue and to stay on topic, also to not ask anything personal.

I will not film anyone without their permission and understand if a client will withdraw from their consent.

I hope I have made my intentions clear.

Corporate film Evaluation

The Corporate film I made is fit for their purposes. The video helped the staff really think about their jobs and what they do, it proved to be refection and learning experience in what the residents said about the staffs and make them up there great and they better themselves.

My client did say there might be issues realising it publicly as some of the clients may not want to associated with their past, we discussed that it would remain a private video, only showing to my client and the rest of their staffs and in the future they could put it on there website.

I stated that I would make a three to four minute film and I did, I kept to the storyboard and proposal and nothing changed throughout production. The only thing that changed was the final questions for the residents and that was just making them acceptable to all and make sure nothing personal was asked.

Was the client happy?

The client was very happy and always up to day with emails and getting to me. They were very happy in getting involved in the video. They liked the video and my main client stated the content kept them interested in what was being presented

My main client also said I kept the residents at ease and they feel comparable being interviewed and the staff enjoyed being involved in the film.

They also said I was very good at getting back to them in good time and how creative and on the ball I was during filming and I said precisely what I was going to do.

Will they use it for their business?

They may put the video on the website, but we agreed that it would say private for the time being.  This is most likely because it might be needed to taken up higher than my client and they may have different mindset to the final video.

What could you have improved about the final product?

Would I improve anything if I were to do this project again? The only thing that could have made it better is better equipment, because I fed up using my own gear and if I were work for a client I would better equipment and look more professional, rather than turn up with my tiny camera. It would have also made the video just a bit shaper and crisper.

Did you make any changes to your corporate video?

I only made a few changes, the idea mainly stayed the same. The only think that changed were the interview questions

PERSONAL PROGRESS

Through a family member I heard about this corporate film, they wanted me to make.  I found the managers email and contacted him that way and he said everything would be fine. We then had a phone call discussing various things, such as ideas and what the purpose of the film would be.  Anything we needed to discuss either was through email or a phone call.

If there was anything important I needed to show or tell my client I would send it through email, so that I could refer back to it and so my client would get any paperwork immediately, and so if any changes needed to be made to any of the paperwork it could be done.

On the day of shooting I was quite proactive and clear what I wanted to do, I would explain any shoots beforehand so none of the staff or residents would get confused. I would also run though the questions beforehand to make sure the person I was interviewing felt comfortable on camera.

Before the day of shooting I was aware of the time schedule pushing on, so I sent an email to clarify this and got a response, resulting in filming in the soonest possible week.

My client disappeared a lot during the day of shooting, this could have been a problem if I needed to check anything, I could have texted him of any problems but in the event everything was fine, because we arranged everything before the day of shooting.

I think the communication overall was very good, it helped that the client was on board and knew what he was doing.

I enjoyed working freelance because it was easier and you only have to answer to yourself, and work to your on schedules, it means you can take control of things. I suppose I am happy with the responsibility, you don’t have guidelines and I am happy making my own guidelines.

Some clients don’t give a lot of creative freedom, which doesn’t feel as enjoyable, but in this case I was give quite a lot of creative scope, a lot of it was up to me whether things got done or not.

Doing the research helped in knowing what I had to do and I knew I could go back to it if was stuck.

Working with a real life client was just like working with anybody else, it is not the first time working for someone else. It does not feel any different, from a college project. The first time contacting my client was a bit nerve racking, but once the first email was sent, I felt a bit better about it. `I was lucky in having a constructive client which made it easy.

Would I want a future in Corporate Film making? I’m already getting more offers. I wouldn’t mind doing it for a few years, but I don’t think I would want to work long term in that field, because anyone can really do it and I prefer being creative and making films. I would like to self employed for a few years, but I would rather work for a company and know I had fixed job with a contract.

I chose to analyse the title sequence the Professionals. This is an late 70’s early 1980’s, of a crime action genre, typical of the era, with chase scenes, and political spy plots [fictional]

Lighting

The sequence switches between outdoor scenes with natural lighting which contrasts with the indoor shots using low key lighting which creates the mood of mystery, tension and supports the ‘undercover” theme. There are some dark moments in scene where one of the main characters is training as if reflects his break the rules ways.

Props

We sees scenes of computers running which informs the viewer that there is intelligence and possible research involved.

The opening shot shows an a establishing of a car smashing though a pane glass window this explosive dramatic uses, of the car immediately creates exiting action. The car motif is used several times. Getting into in cars quickly, a car in a dark tunnel. This possibly implies a high- speed purist, or chase, and immediately draws the viewer in.

Setting

There are many locations within this title sequence this also links with the lighting aspect, the indoors and outdoors. The viewer is presented at one point with a main character ‘Doyle’ running through as the camera cuts in a close up shot. He outside Industrial complex, it is dusty and gritty, and shows the drama could take them anywhere, into danger.

Each of the main characters are introduced individually, in diffent settings which portrays their personalities. The classic though guy Character ‘Bodie’ is introduced in the gym, with a close up shot getting in right in his face. He is boxing and lifting weights, and the boss ‘Crowley’ is shown in walking out of important looking buildings. The shots go from a wide to a close up as looks like me might be going for a debriefing.

Typography

The characters are introduced and the frame is then frozen for dramatic effect with names next to them bold tough font. This most likely to look striking when the viewer is watching it.

The name ‘Professionals’ is shown next to ID photos and the word ‘CIS’ written in lettering which might be seen on military equipment or dog tags. Which also links with the actual show where the team CIS 5 is a fiction above the law corporation, not as high as the military.

Technical codes

The shots jump in abrupt contrast form indoor to outdoor, cutting rapidly, creating a high tempo rhythm connecting with the sense of action. Fast panning shots link the different scenes, creating more of sense of action and speed.

This also reflective of the era of production when they had to splice film and could not fancy transitions. Because this was a TV and they couldn’t afford it, and therefore the shots and editing were more manual.

Music

The music is classic seventies action theme music. It is fast and punchy, but with brass and funk style guitar which exaggerate the dramatic action style. The music has charm of its own and adds the overall feeling of the Title sequence it adds drama and mystery adding to the whole Spy and undercover theme. Every time the viewer listens to theme you know what sight is away wanting to come back again and again. It feels like an earworm and you’re never going to forget it

FMP Research

FMP Practitioner research

For my Practitioner Research I have decided to look at a wide range of directors form old time Film noir and the new form of neo- Noirs.  The Directors I have decided to look at are Alfred Hitchcock, Ridley Scott and Brian De Palma and these three directors have made classical noirs old and new and added something to them.

I shall began looking at the old style of noirs and talking about some of Hitchcock’s works like Spellbound and Stanger’s on a train.

Alfred Hitchcock Bio

Hitchcock wanted to join the army but they felt he was too big to fight in the world war so he took an interest in filmmaking and it was the only way he could be paid. His early works aren’t really as good as his later work.

But since Hitchcock started making movies he cameos in almost all of his films.   His first notable feature was a film titled the Lodger from 1927 and based on Jack the ripper. Most of the films focus on the Rich being strange and are thrillers and he  was known for overstepping the mark a few times during his career like in Psycho where he was not allowed to show someone being stabbed.

His  legacy in filmmaking will last forever.

Spellbound 1945

Spellbound is a psychological film which stars Georgy Peck as John Ballantine, Ingrid Bergman as Doctor Constance. The film is set in a mental hospital for ill minded patients. Doctor Constance is one of the better Doctors who understands and tries to see things in different ways. But she does not seem that happy.

The Hospital then recruits a new Doctor in John Ballantine who everyone is shocked at how young he is and knows so much about mental health. He starts to get warm towards Doctor Constance forming a relationship. But when all the Doctors are performing Surgery John breaks down and everyone around him becomes a bit puzzled and it turns out he isn’t the real John Ballantine and they think this imposter killed him. But Constance thinks he is innocent.

This is a prime example of a Hitchcock plot of everything begins quite nice and you think everything is going to work out, but after about 25 minutes or so he flips the switch and everything becomes that little more interesting.

This film is not the best example of a classic film noir but it does have some strong elements with only some dark lighting when in the patients room creating a sense of dread and fear and some discomfort . It seems to me it might have worked better at the time, some of the sound is quite poor and there is not a lot of music during the film so it is quite quiet.

This could mean that Hitchcock was trying to make this film more suspenseful or could have the opposite effect of trying to bring more of an impact during bigger scenes. But Hitchcock put this at a third dimension because he thought it might bring more attention to towards the scene, so that people could question it and really think about what he was doing.

Ridley Scott

Scott loved watching films as a child and by the time he reached College he pursued a career in film making. He helped to establish the film department at the  college of art in London and his final project here was a short film titled” Boy and Bicycle. His brother starred in the film.  After College he when on to become a trainee set designer and he lead a lot of popular programmes.

Blade Runner 1982

A master piece in  film  and a change of tides of neo noir and a Sci-fi revelation. This story is set in 2019 and in a future Los Angeles, where technology and everything has gone up and developed, where there are genuinely engineered Replicants which have been banned and   Rick Deckard [Harrison Ford] a former Blade runner is called back into action by his former boss to track down four replicants.

This films is a film noir to the core the only difference being it has been set in a futuristic setting all the key elements that make a noir are there. Rick Deckard is a character who is not a hero, but he only wants to do what is right.   We have a Femme Fatal Rachel [Sean Young] who Deckard meets during his interventions and begins a relationship with.

The scenery and landscape of the scenery surrounding this film are spectacular and it is a film that stills stand the test of time today. This film is like an action thriller with lots of twist of turns.

A particular highlight is when Deckard is interviewing Rachel to see whether she is a replicant or not and her answers are the same as the rest. Deckard is sceptical to the idea because he has started to fall for her. The film leaves you with many questions and you will only find out the answers by which cut you watch.

This was one idea I had for my final major project but I didn’t because the film would be too confusing and I wanted to try and keep it simple.

Brian De Palma Bio

Pamla became interested in film after viewing Citizen Cane and Vertigo. He began working with Robert De Niro  from an early career on the Wedding Party. Palma later when on to make better stonger films such as Carrie, Scarface 1983, The Untouchables, and Mission Impossible.

The Untouchables 1990

The Untouchables is a crime drama and was directed by Brain De Palma. A group of police officers gather up evidence to arrest Al Capone and stars Kevin Costner as Eliot Ness, Sean Connery as Jim Malone and Robert de Niro as Al Capone.

This film does not have a lot of noir elements but all the things from a themes from a noir are in  it. Unlike most noir movies this film is based on real events and the film is very strong in its visuals styles and performances from all actors involved. One of the more famous scenes is were there is shoot out scene in the subway and Eliot Ness is trying to capture Al Capone’s accountant and uses a baby in a pram.

In order to get away and the baby falls down the stairs and the scene moves in slow motion making every moment terrifying. This scene since then has been parodied several times since this film came out.

Another reason why this film works is the great dialogue because there is a line Sean Connery says that you can never forget “He sends one of us to the hospital, we’ll send one of his to the Morgue”. Having lines like this can be memorable and people can quote them and that’s one of the things that I want in my short film.

Later Brain de Palma went onto to create other notable films such as the first Mission Impossible film in 1996.

Practitioner summary

From looking at these practitioners  I have learnt how to tell a more interesting story from a different perspective and captivate an audience in a different way, to understand a more tragic way to tell a character’s downfall. This has helped my storyline to end on a more impactful and interesting way.

The visual styles from all these directors have inspired me to look at film in  a different way and helped me think of ways in which I am going to create particular shots within my film that little bit better.

Competition and Audience research

For my Competition I am looking at some of the other films that were in the Oska Bright festival which is the festival I may put my film into.

Their films seem only to be short and not very long. This might be because some of the audience are people with learning difficulties and most don’t really have the greatest attention span when watching longer films and they may not expect a film that is maybe longer than fifteen minutes.

Most the films are not relevant to what I am doing because none are in the same style in what I am creating and most of which seem to be animation and documentary. Or films purely focusing on the visual sides of film making.

Most of the films are very hard to watch, in they aren’t very good and it looks like most of them were rushed.

The Shadow was a film entered in 2009.

I like the concept and idea because it was a bit similar to my idea with the Vigilante apart from it when more with the Zorro idea of an old time Vigilante. Apart from it was very confusing and did not really make sense and trying to be more like a comedy, which I did not really find  funny because the acting and the delivery was extremely poor and it looked rushed to and I wanted to switch it off half way.

The second film I looked at was a film called the Sea Reminds Me. It was mainly a visual film and it does not have any dialogue in it and it is very eye appealing. It has relaxing music and when watching you generally feel like you’re having a joyful time, like being at the sea. The film is carefully edited and moves smoothly from scene to scene. The only issue is, it’s a tad too long and it’s not very appealing to me because it has no story to it and apart from visuals it was not very good.

The third film I looked at was a film called Super Fast which was a short animation. After looking through too many films that frustrated me I had just given up by this point. The Animation was simple but effective enough to work in the films favour. It didnt really have much of a story because it’s tone was quite simple and I only really think it’s centered around people with learning difficulties.

Looking into the competition was interesting but I have felt quite bored looking at all these low budget films. I don’t like to beat up on any film that is made by  anyone independently. But I think I can provide much better quality than this.

The awards are

Best Animation

Best Newcomer

Best Story

Most original film

Best production

Funniest film

By looking at these awards I could go for the most original film because I think my film will stand out and there will be nothing else at the festival like it and it will be more impactful than most films there and I hope to get good feedback from it.

Audience demographics

This information  has been sourced form Yougov.com where I looked at such films as Blade Runner, The Matrix and Batman begins

Blade Runner

Age range: 40- 54

Gender :Male

Social grade :ABC 1

Other films they are interested in.

The first two Terminator films, Star Wars the Empire Strikes Back

The Matrix

Age range: 25-39

Gender:Male

Social grade: ABC 1

Other films they are interested in.

The Matrix Sequels, The first two Terminator films and the Fellowship Of the Ring

Batman Begins

Age range: 25-39

Gender: Male

Social grade: ABC 1

Other films they are interested in,

the rest of the Dark Knight trilogy.

This website is not very exact on its figures, but it gives a clearer indication on who my audience  is and what kind of people they are. One thing that I have noticed is that most of these films have the same results and the age range depends on how old these films are, and not necessarily about how old these people are, because they are the same, they are just of different generations.

I  now know I have a clearer idea of the kind of audience I am aiming for and it is an age range of 25-55 and they are mainly males form the social grade ABC 1 ,who enjoy these kinds of films.

The audience survey did not really prove much, but I was surprised by how many people knew what film noir was and that people are ok with all the violence that I want to do. I did make an error in the survey in question seven and I should have split it up into two questions, because yes it may have been too long, but I did not manage to get the second half in and I still don’t know if people would be happy to watch it.

History of Film Noir

A  Noir is a stylistic film which mainly focusses on dark or bright lighting that makes the film look like a comic book. Most noir’s are crime dramas with their leads mainly being harsh characters who are specialist to deal with that kind of case. Unlike most fiction stories noir’s can be very realist, they’re never over the top villains and they will spend the film being quite serious.

Film noirs were created from the 1930’s until the 1950’s the first film which is Doubt was a Proto noir. This was before they even knew that style was a film called Underworld released in 1927 which is a silent crime drama and starred Clive Brook as the main lead. The first talkie was a film called Thunderbolt.

Some of the best noirs did not come just from the US, some came from others parts of the world. Such as the film titled M, which was directed by Fritz Lang and starts Peter Lorre a child murderer, going through things in his head, leaving an M in every murder. The film is not a straight noir,b ut it does have some elements.

There are certain  rules in order for a film to become a noir.

This list come from the BBC documentary Rules of film Noir from 2009

It needs to be a fallen world, everyone is no good, even the hero has demons of his own.

There needs to be female fatal, a beautiful female who the main character is interested in, but cannot trust.

The Anti-hero is the person who the story focusses on and who is not a hero and just as bad as the bad guys, but knowing the good way.

Make it any colour as long as it’s black. What they are stating is creating the black and white adds towards the dark atmosphere and the nature and surrounding towards the characters.   The music they build for the scenes for the characters mainly the killer, Murderer or Villain and speeds up whenever they enter and sometimes foreshadows events.

It ain’t what you say it’s the way that you say it

In the 1930’s the film companies created the Hays code which films at the time had to follow certain rules which meant showing no violence and sex or sex references  but the film makers at the time would slip little lines in that the adults in the audience would get. This is a key part of film noir of hiding many sexual innuendos, by remaking and talking about foul play without actually saying it.

When noirs would use violence they would usually cut away and you would sometimes see the characters in shadow, because technically they’re still following the code of using no violence, because you know what’s going on,  you just can’t see it.

These are very clear ways of getting around things when filming or toning down a films violence.

The creation of Neo- Noir’s

Neo noirs are the modern equivalent of film noirs. They will have certain theme from film noirs such as the anti hero, the femme fatal and the gritty reality of harsh worlds. But is mainly set in US and in other parts of the countries.  It is hard to narrow down when these films first came into creation.

The earliest Film noir is the film Chinatown from 1974 which is set in 1937 and stars Jack Nicholson. During the film events Nicholson’s character Jake is hired to solve a case, but it all ends up being false and a ruse, but all the elements from an old time film noir are there, still within the traces apart from the tone has been modernised.

Neo noirs have a more stylised and cleaner look than older neo noirs, they do not have the restrictions that the older Noirs had and are able to show high detailed scenes of violence, with such films, LA Confidential and Sin City which do not go without one scene of violence.

This form of newer Noirs bought a new life towards many characters and one of these is the film Batman from 1989 which changed the face of Batman forever. No longer was he a goofy character he was dark and serious, Batman is one of the impressions for my Vigilante and building a gritty world around the character and stories.

Neo Noir was always great at putting comics to screen in such films as Dick Tracy, Sin City and Watchmen where at certain times you feel you are watching a real comic books.  Dick Tracy from 1990 which stars Warren Beatty as Dick Tracy. It is more of kid friendly film and the violence is cut back but all the visuals around it create a very neo noir feel and tone. Dick Tracy was written around 1931 just when noirs were starting out. This film puts the old and new together making the best of both elements.

What I hope to create in my Neo- noir by using a little bit of the old and new styles of noir to pay tribute and make my own twist upon film noir and Neo noir.

The Vigilante and Storylines

My Final major project main theme is that is has a vigilante character named Kyle Hawk or otherwise known as Nighthawk.

The story line is not like most superhero origin stories, my storyline more bit like Batman Begins where there will be long flashbacks where you see the character staring up.

There will also be a narration where you hear the character talk in long monologues. I got this idea from the film Watchmen, with another Vigilante type character called Rorschach. In the film it follows his journal and talks about the crime and events on that week.

The story’s main prime focus is on revenge and anger. The best development  in any of these superhero films, especially in Spiderman where he contently remarks that with great power comes great responsibly which is a code almost every hero learns.

If they were to beat someone up with no rhyme or reason they would just be as bad as the people they were fighting, which is one thing I want to try and tell within the story and is something even the main character will learn by the end.

The Character is kind of a cross between Batman from DC comics and the Punisher from Marvel comics, but unlike the punisher my character does not go that extra mile to kill someone. He is more on the side of Batman and has a code not to kill because the character beleives he would just be a bad as them.

The backstory is similar to Batman with that his family was killed by a bigger higher power. The difference is that my character came from the bottom of the pile and was not rich and famous and had to train on the streets in order to survive.

And also like Batman my Character will have someone aiding him like Alfred, but very different in the things that he can do. This character will provide Nighthawk with all his gadgets and tech and also does all the clean-up work after so that Nighthawk’s alter ego will have reason to be out every night.

Following the more traditional film noir and neo noir elements there will be a Femme Fatal character as well.  If  I were to sum up her character I based it on Cat Woman because she always had a love/ hate relationship  with Batman and I kind of wanted my own. However, unlike Cat woman this character suffers from a mental illness and manic depression. This was to make it more interesting and a way that the police could capture her.

Like most of these movies there will also be the opposite to a hero in form a supervillain, for this character I didn’t base it on anyone from comics, expect maybe Kingpin, a Spiderman and Daredevil  villain, who looks fat but really isnt and his body is full of muscle.  I based his character on  the American mob bosses but put up to level ten because he would beat people senseless until their head cracked.

To make it more interesting however he will have some form of suit because in my film he makes internet broadcasts on people who have double crossed him so that he won’t be arrested.

The last major thing in the story is the police who are also big features in superhero movies and crime films. The main police officer in my story is Sgt Smith a high ranking officer and detective, but unlike a commissioner Gordon form Batman who is the side and always roots for him. My character however will be a dirty officer who arrests the wrong people and the main bosses stooge and wants to capture the Vigilante for his own game.

I am planning to have a confrontation scene similar to Batman the Dark Night which is something we remade earlier this year and now that I learn form that I could do it better. The difference will be that the Vigilante will escape the room and hold the officer to ransom. In real life this would never happen, so I am going to add a line where the main officer says he thinks he can handle it.

Legal and Ethical research

What are the rules of being a Vigilante?

We all know that holding the law within your own hands is illegal and against the law but if someone was to become a Vigilante for real what would happen.  If you got arrested what kind of ranking officer would you see?

Number one: What is a Vigilante?

A vigilante is another word of guardian or watchmen in and is someone who is outside the law and fights it by themselves or is in within a group.

Vigilantes are better known within the film and TV world with such Robin Hood, Batman, The green Arrow and the punisher who are also comic book characters.

Vigilantes have been around since the late nineteen hundreds with such groups as the Bald Knobbers  who began appearing in 1880 who were retaliated against invading marauders at the time a film was later made about their exploits in 1919 in the film the Shepard of the Hill.

This seems to be quite tame by today’s standards and not all Vigilantes are like you see in the movies.

Research sourced form http://www.oddee.com/item_99099.aspx

Number Two: Why become a Vigilante?  We have all seen superhero movies and think we could probably do that, but in the real word that would not work.  For one thing it seems to be a bigger deal in USA with them even letting some Vigilantes carry on what they are doing.

Case and point “Phoenix Jones”, who only started crime fighting after one of his friends was assaulted, put a Ski mask on and decided to get justice for his friend.  He later adapted his suit to include a bullet proof vest and started his own group of superheroes.  They would chase away car thieves and break up fights.

The group has since disbanded and it seemed to be a group for fun. I don’t really think it was ever serious because looking at articles Phoenix and other members of his club never got arrested.

It seems that in other countries, however, they treat vigilantes differently and the laws may not be so strong.  In Mexico 2014 a group of vigilantes decided that the police were not enough and took control of their town once their leader was killed. This group consisted of 1500 members who would stop drivers from bringing weapons and drugs into their town by forming check points on the roads.

It may have been that police had been trying to do something. They may have been stopped by the Cartel who may have threatened their families to make sure they did not do anything to oppose them.  On the other side of the coin you may have had the police siding with the Cartel in order to be in their good books or take money from them or just because they were scared.

The fact that the Vigilantes arrested  twelve police officers and a former director of public security who they claimed were responsible for their leaders killing, shows they didn’t trust the police in their town.

Some members of the group killed two tourists who refused to stop at one of their check points.  No actions were taken during this incident.  This shows there is no law or justice system because in our country there would be an investigation to find the culprits. However, the Mexican officials were aware of their existence and they tolerated them, because they felt they had a lack of officers for rural areas.

Number Three- What happens to a vigilante if you get caught?

It really depends on what level of violence they do.  It’s like with any crime that anyone could break. It is the shame charge of assault you may be given a warning and no more but if there injury’s involved the sentence could be mush worse and you could serve time in prison.

A vigilante may have a good reason to break the law. But in the police’s minds it is not justified because a Vigilante will never think straight and may only do these things for revenge or for their own ends.

And with any crime it depends on if the police have enough evidence against because they could simply arrest you without any reason they need warrants for arrests and if the Vigilante would wear a mask they would have to lead an investigation and have many leads in suspects. So it would take a while for a Vigilante to get caught but in time they would get you.

You would most likely be interviewed and it would clearly be a more experienced officer and they would most likely have back up if the suspect was known for violent because unlike the movies they would be aware if they were that well trained then they would have to have others waiting in.

In film I plan to have my Vigilante caught and interrogated I will not follow all of these rules because it would make it too hard for the character to get out again.

Regulation

There will be violence and a lot of blood and some scenes that could be gory and will show some specific detail.  Form the BFCC guidelines it seems not to very clear on where my film would sit at either an eighteen or a fifteen.

If was going to show it at a film festival I would have to clearly show what age range it was.

VISUAL AND TECHNICAL ELEMENTS OF FILM NOIR

Film noir has always have a strong visual style and dark lighting and dark shadows that reflect the characters and the tone of the films. This term is called chiaroscuro. This is the Renaissance word of the different between Light and Dark.

My idea will be in colour and there will be some shadows shots but I do not want too many. Most of the shots will take place at night, so I am going to go and do my location Recce at night so I will have a clear idea of what the scenes will look like when I costume and make possible test shots testing the lighting process.

I want to have some Dutch angles within my film to create a bit of tension and not to be normal and outside of box to create fear around the Vigilante and if that costume does not quite workout I will darken the scenes to cover up a lot of the detail.

They used to use this in old Noirs this lighting because of low budget and film noirs were very cheap to make.   Because it would hide all the cheap sets and the film makers would have to worry about the detail, the dark would hide in shadows.

I am also planning to have a city skyscraper scenes and shots and planning to use green screen in order to create shots, which they would use in modern noirs like Sin City using it to create the comic backgrounds.  But I plan to do test shots before I use the green screen so I can make sure it works effectively because I had only used it on a small scale, then I will bring into final cut pro to learn how to work green screen effects on there.

I will also be using electric effects on the Vigilante’s gloves he is wearing in certain scenes, and will fight with them. I will get these effects form YouTube and learn how to rota scope frame by frame whilst the fight scenes are going on.

This next information comes from

https://school.rocketjump.com/learn/directing-container/intro-to-fight-choreography

I am also going to learn how not to hurt people  during the fight scenes, for I am going to have to safely rehearse the scenes multiple times before getting the scene right. The tone of fight has to be right and at the right pacing and most include

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwMLs3sek6Q

Fast and frenetic, or slow and dramatic

Nonstop onslaught, or clear pauses and breaks

Constant rhythm or varying speeds

Decide what pacing will best fit your story and characters and to make sure that the music matches with the fight and get it a steady rhythm and so that the audience can feel adrenaline and feels what the character feels.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZzcxcKPcrI

A example of this is in the film Hannah form 2011 where a fight scene builds up slowly and the character is getting ready for a fight and you as the audience can feel his heart beating, as he is nosing his is being watched around him and taking notes of how many there are. The music helps to create this until the fight starts and he clam and ready and takes everyone out quickly.

I like the one take shot and it might be something that I want to try, because it looks smooth and I want to try and make people think that it is not a one shot take.

FINAL MAJOR PROJECT PROPOSAL

Rationale

This year, thus far, has been an interesting one.  We started with a one week project titled Creep, which was followed by a remake of a scene. These early projects were too easy and I felt were boring at times. I wanted more of a challenge and longer time frames to work on projects.

Next, I created a narrative film about my life; a radio drama where I recorded my own foley sounds and an experimental film about disorientation. These later projects I am more proud of because I received great feedback and they gave me the challenge I wanted. I felt they showed what I am really capable of and pushed me to try new things. So for my final major project I want to step up and do something I have never done before and continue to stretch myself.

Project Concept

The idea is to make a short, neo noir film ranging from 15- 30 mins. The main character will be a vigilante with a femme fettle and villain as the other key characters. All the characters will meet each other through the same objective, which is what they believe is best for the city, during which they will experience brutal scenes of violence. The film will show their backstories and thoughts whilst incorporating interesting visual elements e.g. landscapes, city scenes and camera angles. I would like to film alternative endings and screen different versions to see audience reactions.

For the research I will look into the history of Film noir; the rules for making film noir and the creation of neo noir films. I will also look into lighting so that I can learn new techniques and use the best possible equipment.

I will require lots of costumes and props which will have very specific details, for example the vigilante will wear a black eye mask and electrically charged gloves.

Why? Film festival rules

Evaluation

I am going to evaluate my work by making a weekly video vlog and post on YouTube discussing what’s happing and if anything has changed during my process.

At the end I will do a sum up video of this project, and the entire year and some interesting things that I learnt over the years.

Website design evolution

For this project we had to make our own website to use for a production company business. This project was only short and lasting two weeks. We first had to look at other media production websites to compere and review them and take bits we liked and could improve on. Most of the websites I looked at were local and proved to be very plain and simple. I took a few notes form some of the websites and used some of the weaker elements and tried to improve them on mine.

Because I felt there was too much information, on some of them for some of the stuff they do, so I tried to simplify on mine.

The process making the website was a learning experience it took a lot longer than I thought and really did not feel I had enough time to finish it. There were a lot problems getting started, I accidently got rid of my option button and I couldn’t easily access my pages and I did not know how to get it back.

I found the whole process very frustrating because when you would type up text I would often delete it by mistake and it was a long process to get it back again because you had to select it again.

Also when changing image backgrounds you could not always get the picture where you wanted and it kept moving on its own and sometimes the programme would not save your work and you would have to do again.

I got some feedback for a support worker Dave who had a quick look. I told him that it was not finished because it was so pain stacking and tasking.

His first impressions that is was simple and effective layout. There were some nice big pictures, nothing was condensed.

Some of the writing was hard to read, which I did explain I did not really know how to change it.

Overall I liked the idea of the project but when it came to working on it I hated it because with the software I would have needed a lot of time to get it right and make it perfect. Because I just wanted a site where you log on and knew straight what it was. With some of Dave’s points, even with my website unfinished he still got some idea of what I was trying to do.

But I know if make a proper website with all the features you need, it will take months to do so. I still feel if I had more time I could make a creditable site and update it over time.

A look into Illictwebdesign

https://www.illicitwebdesign.co.uk/web-design

They are an exeter based website design company who also web seaching, copyrighting and graphic desgin.

They do not have seemed to have worked for major compies, most are local and mainly leisure companines and shops. They overall design is quite simple and not really much to look at.

To me they seem to be quite dull and not really offering much, their quality could be better and one of thier websites is based near in the same area they work, which seems a little cheeky to me. They do however seem very friendly people seeming they would get back to you. They can laise with you by meeting you for coffee or by skype

When I first go the brief I decided to a radio drama set on a lighthouse because I felt I did not really like the others and I like story telling. I realised the main issue was keeping it short and getting the storyline across in five minutes. I had to make it clear to the audience what was going on at all times because they could see where they were and I wanted to make it clear. I did not want to have too many characters because it made easier on the time frame. I created the story to be more isolated and so people could relate to them.

When I researched the target audience I found the Demographic to male’s in the older age range, over 50’s. I knew that my usual violence or complex story telling would work and that I would have to tone it down to make it simple, without the sort of language and going for a period setting that they would enjoy in 1937 and hinting at a couple of reverences to the time period.

At the beginning of the story, when I looked back at the sprit and got others to look back over it for feedback. They weren’t clear on where the stories setting was. So I went back over the spirit to change and go over a few thing. Like the first scene where the two men arrive on the boat I put in a line to say they were approaching the lighthouse. This also made it better because originally there were no lines of dialogue until they reached the lighthouse and no one would be clear of who anyone really was.

There was a mixture of sound within this project form thunder to spanners. None were really that difficult to do. The Ones that turned out well were the the sailing boat sound because that was made with me turning on the tap and filling the sink up and moving my hand though the water. Also the picking up the spanner because it was so simple all I did was picked up a spoon slowly.  It did take a few times to get to sound right. The thing that made the sound truly better was in editing, I managed to get more in my editing software to complete the sound track.

I took me a few edits to get the script right to work without visuals. I managed to get all the story within the time frame I think it turned out well. Recording the sound was fun. But It is not want to something I would want to do as job. I learnt how to write a proper radio script and these are skills that I can use in the future.

Video art feedback

After making my expimental film I have jsut revsied the feedback and it is just the way I wanted it to be.

Here is some of the feedback.

Very interesting, liked the editing. Instenty knew what the emetion was before reading the tiltle

Quite mecacing feeling felt like something frightening was about to happen. Liked the patterns used e.g drain cover.

Bit trippy

Hurting people’s brain

I also watched some other eximental flims and my favourite was stressed was made by Will and I though the message was very clear and got fed up with him going back and fourth and never leaving the room.

Media website research

In this new assignment we have to create a small website and make a small business but first we had to look in some other media based business.

Crediton media

Is a company that is based in Crediton and they mainly focus on filming events and corporate film.

The main site has some good fonts and a nice background, very dark and looks professional. There are, however, text issues and grammar issues with not all of the text spelt right, which seems unprofessional for a website that is trying to sell services. They also have records of some of the projects they have worked on.

It has some good features but the main website seems to be unresponsive and does not work, mainly their links to other websites such as YouTube and LinkedIn, where as Vimeo and Facebook seemed to work and that’s not a very good standard when only half of your links work. Their content seems to be lacking with them only really having a DVD duplicator, DVD cover making and hiring out cameras.

They may only be a small company but their website could be improved.

AB… The Ideas Agency

It is a media company based in London and Exeter, which is also slipped into different sections filmmaking and journalism.

The main site is very clean and has videos playing during the home page and the list of work they do and the people they worked with such as Tesco, Maynard School and others.

The information is very strong there are a lot of history of the products they work on or are working on.

They also have a page dedicated to the people that work for them. Which is handy because it gives faces to those who bought people to life.

The website looks strong and there are a lot of good features, there maybe too mush information and I feel it a little bit flabbergasted by it. It has a good use of colors but I think it is just a bissness site and not a show off work and it that sense I think it works.

It is a media, film company based in Exeter, Plymouth, Bristol Birmingham and London.

They state that they are on of the UK’s leading corporate film companies.

The main site looks really clean and looks more like a blog site because of the white, which makes it look quite plain even though there are more bright colors and is an improvement over the previous two sites.

Again there is a lot of information that they do and they seem to be quite diverse in what they do motion graphics, Corporate, Adverts, live events, design, animation, food and editing.

They also have a complete show reel of all the work that they have done on a separate, even though at first I was not clear you had to click on them to be videos. I though they were just pictures

There site is very clear and very professional but the white really frustrates me. I feel they could have used more striking colors but that’s really the only flaw and there is something all these websites could do with and that’s an intro video clearly explaining what they do. Because not everyone has time to read long paragraphs.
