Rationale
This year, thus far, has been an interesting one. We started with a one week project titled Creep, which was followed by a remake of a scene. These early projects were too easy and I felt were boring at times. I wanted more of a challenge and longer time frames to work on projects.
Next, I created a narrative film about my life; a radio drama where I recorded my own foley sounds and an experimental film about disorientation. These later projects I am more proud of because I received great feedback and they gave me the challenge I wanted. I felt they showed what I am really capable of and pushed me to try new things. So for my final major project I want to step up and do something I have never done before and continue to stretch myself.
Project Concept
The idea is to make a short, neo noir film ranging from 15- 30 mins. The main character will be a vigilante with a femme fettle and villain as the other key characters. All the characters will meet each other through the same objective, which is what they believe is best for the city, during which they will experience brutal scenes of violence. The film will show their backstories and thoughts whilst incorporating interesting visual elements e.g. landscapes, city scenes and camera angles. I would like to film alternative endings and screen different versions to see audience reactions.
For the research I will look into the history of Film noir; the rules for making film noir and the creation of neo noir films. I will also look into lighting so that I can learn new techniques and use the best possible equipment.
I will require lots of costumes and props which will have very specific details, for example the vigilante will wear a black eye mask and electrically charged gloves.
Why? Film festival rules
Evaluation
I am going to evaluate my work by making a weekly video vlog and post on YouTube discussing what’s happing and if anything has changed during my process.
At the end I will do a sum up video of this project, and the entire year and some interesting things that I learnt over the years.
